How Fast Fashion is Destroying the Environment and Exploits Workers

Fast fashion is cheap clothing that is mass-produced in order to be trendy and more fashionable. This clothing is essentially disposable as it is poorly made so it falls apart in just a couple of wears. But it helps the demand for cheap clothing that makes consumers feel fashion-forward. Companies that are considered to be fast fashion include Zara, H&M, Uniqlo, Forever 21, GAP, and Boohoo, which are often associated with trendy, yet inexpensive clothing. This clothing is also often made in poor working conditions and takes advantage of workers in less developed countries.
The creation of apparel and footwear accounts for 8% of the greenhouse gases emitted in the atmosphere. It also creates an "unprecedented strain" on the environment for this type of fashion to continue. Places that produce this clothing have destroyed rivers filled with chemicals and lack any life. These chemicals are also often cancer-causing and can cause disease to become rampant in these communities.
Some solutions to remedy this problem is to stop buying things at fast-fashion retailers. Instead, buy more high-quality clothing that will last longer. You can also go to thrift stores and buy cheap, but more high-quality clothing. You should try to take care of your clothing to make sure that it will last a long time. Learn how to sew and fix holes in your clothing. Doing stuff like this will allow fast fashion to stop being the main way people shop for clothes.

The Strange Loophole that Causes DC Residents to be Taxed Without Representation

Even though DC residents pay federal taxes they have no say on how this money is spent as they have no representation within the federal government. This is because they do not have statehood, and therefore do not have democratic representation in the Senate. The district does have a member of congress, but her power is almost non-existent, as she cannot vote on any issues presented in congress. All bills that she has written to give DC congressional power or statehood have not gone through, and so the cycle of DC having no voting power continues. So even though their population is larger than Vermont or Wyoming and their GDP is higher than 16 states, they still are excluded from voting on federal issues like the rest of the US population.
This is mostly a partisan issue, as Republican leaders do not want the majority democrat District of Colombia to gain representation since it benefits the democratic party. Also, the district's decisions come down to the republican party due to their power in the federal government, despite the area being again, by far has a democrat majority.
This issue has existed since the creation of Washington DC and has been improving at a snail's pace since then. For example, until 1964, residents could not even vote in presidential elections. A few years later, the residents were granted the right to elect a mayor and a city council. But the main problem remains today, the fact that they are being taxed without federal representation, that at least has some power. This is an issue that most people are not aware of but is outrageous due to the fact that this major loophole has caused people to lose their right to vote.

Doctors and the Death Penalty

Should doctors be involved in capital punishment? Currently, doctors reject the death penalty, as participating would violate their Hippocratic oath of doing no harm to their patients. The American Medical Association prohibits doctors from being involved, except for when writing death certificates. Some people though, believe that involving doctors would make death be a smoother process that would be less painful for the person being executed. Also, the fact that doctors are not involved makes the actual process of someone being executed have a high risk of being botched. The people involved in creating these methods are not doctors, and thus do not have much expertise on how to do it correctly or in a manner that causes not much pain.
Personally, I am against the death penalty, but the manner in which people are being killed is very troubling to me. I understand the ethics that make doctors not want to be involved, but this has made executing people a very messy process. I also understand that the ideal of the death penalty being removed from the US justice system is unlikely since the majority of people in the US support it. At the very least I don't think that it is ethical for people to be killed in this manner, but is it even more unethical for a doctor to facilitate it?
I think that lethal injections need to be rethought, and have the American public educated on what the death penalty actually entails. Like how the fact that the death penalty does not deter crime, and innocent people are still being killed by the US justice system in this manner. That the death penalty is often unfair to people who have been abused, have a mental illness, and/or intellectual disability. I think that by re-educating people, maybe the death penalty can be rethought out.

Celebrity Worship and Mental Illness

American culture tends to worship celebrities, as seen in the OJ documentary. OJ becomes god-like to all Americans, transcending even his own race. But how does he do this? I would argue though his own mental illness he is able to be successful at this. He has been referred to as a narcissist and a sociopath by several news articles, although there is unlikely any actual diagnosis to this fact. Even if we do not know for sure if he actually has them, the characteristics which he has of these illnesses are what allowed him to thrive and become such a big celebrity. His charisma and manipulation allowed for people to adore him. His willingness to use people in order to gain power, as the throws black people under the bus by isolating himself from them. He doesn't want to share the power with other black people, he can be the only one with it. This is why he made no attempt to help the black community. This is what white America wants at this time though, so it allows him to thrive. Based on all of this, being a narcissistic sociopath appears to give an advantage to becoming famous and thus worshiped by the American public. America wants these traits in someone they want to idolize, so it allows people like OJ Simpson to become these massive cultural icons.
American culture also seems to support the unhealthy idolization of celebrities, until it becomes a mental illness. People obsess over celebrities until it causes them to have an unhealthy body image. Additionally, there have been associations found "between celebrity worship and narcissism, addiction, stalking behavior, compulsive buying, depression, and anxiety, among other things" (all psych). Clearly, there is a large connection between celebrity culture and mental illness.
