Black Friday Gun Shopping

With Thanksgiving break around the corner, so is Black Friday. Black Friday has amazing deals but one of its drawbacks is gun deals. Obviously, this attracts customers and leads to more weapons on the street. To be honest, this scares me because of the mass shootings that happened this year. With so many weapons being sold on Black Friday, it raises a concern for background checks.
Background checks increase tremendously on the day up to more than 200,000. The FBI are the ones in charge of these background checks but since they get so many at once, they struggle to keep up. So many people are blaming the FBI that people are running on the loose with dangerous weapons but the reality is, they can't keep up. This has led them to request more resources and a higher budget. The FBI is highly requesting these resources because of the background check system failing in the past. Since their system wasn't up to date, it led to a massacre at a texas church of 26 people in 2017. Just recently, the FBI has assigned 300 people to help deal with the large requests for background checks.
Hopefully, the FBI is able to keep with these background checks and are able to carefully inspect each one. If they are able to inspect each one and not rush it to just get them done, I believe that this will reduce the risk of putting another mass shooter on the street. Hopefully, I didn't scare y'all since it is a thanksgiving break and were just trying to enjoy time with our families but I do want to put it out there.

  1. This is a really interesting post with all the Black Friday shopping, it doesn't occur to many people that that shopping includes weapons as well. The point you made when saying that background checks are often rushed is very revealing of the risk and cause of many unregulated gun sales. If the FBI had more funding, would that solve and help prevent gun incidents and school shootings? What else can be done to manage rushed background checks? I think that it could definitely help, but we can't know for sure until measures are taken to try.

  2. wow! I didn't think of Black Friday applying to weapons as well. To think of it, it's kind of worrying if people in areas such as where we live in are promoted gun/weapon sales. The fact people will purchase a weapon on Black Friday for cheap and possibly not get background checked is troublesome. The FBI should focus more on getting background checks done so we don't need to see anymore shooting occur. Maybe they'll consider upping their systems to change the amount of slip-ups occur, as that seems like the only option as of now.

  3. This is a really interesting post, and brought up an important point with gun sales. I had never thought about Black Friday applying to weapons as well. It's worrisome that stores are making it even more accessible for people to purchase guns, especially because in my opinion, they're already too accessible. The number of mass shootings in the U.S is already through the roof, so having that number continue to grow because of increased accessibility to guns is scary.
