Fake news?

There has been a lot of controversy over the accuracy of news sources, especially in recent years with Trump's election and the presence of the idea of fake news. There has also been a lot of discussion about whether or not our political climate has become more divided because of this idea of fake news. Trump's incredibly public argument that news outlets such as CNN produce fake news because they are arguing against his ideas or are "going against him" are not fair because he should not be labeling a credible news source as "fake" simply because they do not agree with him and his methods of leading the country.

The presence of this political spectrum and the fact that the two sides are so different have been dividing this country much more these past few years than in the past. There are more people that fit the spectrum on both the extreme ends of the spectrum, which has led to more of a split political climate. This has been causing people to label others as extremists on both ends of the spectrum, and in my opinion, there is no middle ground anymore where people are simply neutral or are slightly more on one side of the spectrum than the other. You are simply liberal, or conservative. There is no in-between, which worries me because this mindset will continue making our political world more split and it will be harder to unify under one cause or mindset.

  1. I agree with your point that the political climate throughout the country has become extremely divided in the past years. Like the polls we observed in class, it's clear that between now and 2000, democrats and republicans have a tendency to disagree with one another on almost every issue. Rather than attempting to compromise with either side, it seems as if the two political parties have waged a war against one another with, like you said, no middle ground. What does this mean for the future of the country? In my opinion, if the country continues to divide itself in this polar-opposite manner on a political level, it will gradually become more problematic in the coming generations.

  2. These are all great observations and points! I think it is extremely worrying that we don't have an area for middle ground, and no ability to compromise. However, this divide started somewhere, and it means that at some point there was a divide, but there was also an area for overlap. What do you think needs to be done to try and shift politics back in that direction? Since this method is useful for winning (but not actually creating a strong and unified country), do you think it will take a president winning by uniting the country and demonstrating that it is possible (and arguably more successful) to begin to point the country back in the direction we all seem to want it to go?
