Hillary's Popularity Vote

Hillary Clinton: the first woman to win the popular vote in US History.

In the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote against our current President Donald Trump by a landslide. However, Clinton lost the electoral college vote, and since then, she has been losing popularity as a possible 2020 election candidate.

Hillary led by 2.8 million votes in the popularity vote, but she lost the electoral vote by 77 votes. Before the election, it was clear that Hillary would win the election, but as soon as it hit election day, the country was shocked by her loss. According to NBC news, "the data team doing analytics for the Trump campaign was telling reporters that, as of Oct. 27, they had just a 15 percent chance of winning." Many consider the reason why Clinton lost the electoral vote was because of the main argument that the election was biased based on sexism. Many of her supporters' argued based on the fact that her competitor was sexist, and that many Republicans were stereotypically sexist. However, this argument made it very easy for people to divide based on the "sexism" argument because they most likely didn't want people to "call them out" for being sexist since it's so negative.

  1. I like your insight on this. I have a question to pose. Do you believe that the preliminary statistics on who was voting for Hillary was skewed due to sexism? Meaning that people said they were voting for her in order to sound progressive but in reality abstained or voted for the opposition, in fear of a woman leading the country? But yes, the election was pretty sexist and Trump is definitely one of the faces of sexism.

  2. This is a very interesting post. However, because Clinton won the popular vote why do you think that the reason she lost the electoral college is because of sexism? It is true that Republicans are typically sexist and Trump was able to get Republican voters to the poll who typically do not vote, especially in the swing states, which is a main reason he won the election. Do you think that more Republican voters voted in the swing states because they did not want to have a woman as President?
