Segregated Private Schools

While researching for my Law and Society Project, I became interested in the idea of whether or not 14th Amendment rights were still being upheld in schools everywhere. Even though the overall idea is that most schools are desegregated, I figured there still had to be some private schools, if not public, that were racially or culturally segregated just based on the fact that private schools can afford to segregate in their school. I did some more research into known private schools that do continue to have/promote segregation and according to multiple news publications, there are still schools in counties such as D.C. that are still segregated. Another example of this is how in 2018, Sumter County, Alabama got its first integrated school, meaning before 2018, there was no progress made.

If we think about it, it's easy for private schools to continue to segregate. Because private schools do cost more money to attend, education comes at a higher price than just pure money. White families in certain societies are more likely to be able to afford private education, while lower-income families are not able to. This means that there is more likely to be more segregation despite the rules stated in the 14th Amendment.

Another issue that was brought up was one that was brought to our attention by Mr. Stewart himself. He mentioned that certain areas may continue to be segregated because of the fact that certain areas remain racially isolated, which means whites are in one community/area while blacks are in another. This affects the amount of diversity in each community and in the facilities (including schools) for each community as well. It is the 21st century, and it deeply saddens me that even though racial isolation has improved, private schools continue to take advantage of their ability to profit from segregation.
